Technologies for Assessing Activities of Daily Living (TA-ADL)
The special session at The Sixth IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering ~BioMED 2008~ is organised by Bart Jansen (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Rudi Deklerck (Vrije Universiteit Brussel).
Call for papers
The main disadvantage of the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) schemes that are currently used to assess the condition of the elderly is that they require intensive observations by the geriatrist. In order to overcome this, one often reverts to questionnaires rather than actual observations in the natural home environment of the elderly. Hence, results are not always accurate. Moreover, the labor-intensive observations or questionnaires entail that ADL scales are not very well suited for progress monitoring on a daily basis.
Progress in image processing, sensor technologies, and signal processing will make it possible in the future to assess the ADL scales in a (semi-) automated manner. The goal of this special session is to gather leading geriatrists, engineers, and computer scientists in order to discuss the latest technological aids for assessing ADL scales.
This workshop is seeking contributions from medical doctors focusing on how technological aids related to ADL monitoring could influence the quality, speed, ease, and cost of diagnosing and monitoring patients. On the other hand, engineers are asked to submit technical papers proposing technical solutions for ADL assessment, including wireless sensor networks or vision based approaches.
